Gqom Oh! is a new label set up to display the fresh sounds coming out of Durban. This sampler EP features tracks by Cruel Boyz from Mdantsane, Eastern Cape and Mafia Boyz (average age 17) plus a solo production by Citizen Boy. A 12 track, 10 artist Gqom Oh! compilation album is set for release next year.

"Sickest drop of darkside Gqom outta modern day South Africa! Featuring trax by Citizen Boy, Mafiaboyz and Cruel Boyz all specially mastered for vinyl.
'Gqom Oh! - The Sound of Durban' -
Essentially it's a drier, darker, skeletal antecedent to Kwaito, the style espoused by DJ Mujava et al, tending to use bilious low end drones, parched drums, and gasps-as-percussion inna Kraftwerkian fashion - something like techno for a club sequence in a Neil Blomkamp flick. Ahead of a full 2LP collection, this scene sampler 12" introduces us to Citizen Boy with the drugged swagger of 'Hometown Glory (Gqomu Remake)', and to Mafiaboyz with their crack'd killer, 'Shabba (704 Gqomu Remake)' on the A-side, and then turns attentions to the outstanding B-side of Cruel Boyz' sprawling 'Touch It', replete with killer hip hop halfstep breakdowns. Huge tip!"

Sickest drop of darkside Gqom house outta modern day South Africa! Featuring trax by Citizen Boy, Mafiaboyz and Cruel Boyz all specially mastered for vinyl. 'Gqom Oh! - The Sound of Durban' marks a step up in terms of fidelity for a sound which was previously only available as low bitrate downloads via the kasimp3 server (we urge you to go hunt that site!). South Africa is a unique case in the African continent, a place of the soul that has no equal: so strongly western and so deeply African at the same time. With its mix of ethnic tradition and urban tension it has been a cradle of cultural phenomena. In its own way it is a country of great wealth, particularly rich of contradictions, yet 20 years after the end of apartheid little appears to have changed for the millions of black people that live in its notorious townships.

It is from this background that innovations are continully being injected into the living body of the local music culture. Set in the ghettos of the port city of Durban, new stories are being born with a dancefloor language named "Gqom".

Gqom is named after the noise generated by a stone falling on a floor tile: in the local slang “gqom iz da sound u get wen u drop a rock on tiles”. This exoteric bass music often opens to a crescendo, with a few shortcuts in 4/4, before gathering pace into a polyrhythmic frenzy. Everything happens in a DIY-oriented universe, grafting organic and home-made samples (dog barks, whip lashes, drumming sounds).

There is a line of continuity with the south African house movement, though with totally new elements from the sounds of dubstep, and a meta-historical influence inspired by black radical movements beyond any trivial political claims.
